The use of color in architectural design combines multiple factors beyond aesthetics by also affecting the user’s behaviour and emotions. Its implementation varies depending on the style and purpose of the architecture. Colors are used to create contrast with predominant tones which can in turn, highlight details. Of these many, red tones has a strong visual impact and creates an overwhelming emphasis on the elements of the structure.
The use of red color in architecture can serve a variety of purposes, relied upon the context and intent it has to translate. Red is symbolic of strong emotions such as passion, power, and energy. In architecture, the use of red can be used to convey a sense of strength, intensity, and vitality. In some cultures, red is a color that has significant historical or cultural meaning. For example, in Chinese architecture, the color red is associated with good luck and happiness, and is often used in buildings and decorations for this reason. Red can also be used in architecture for practical purposes, such as to improve visibility, accessibility or to indicate danger.
Overall, the use of red in architecture can be a powerful tool for conveying meaning, creating visual interest, and enhancing the functionality of a building or space. Its use in contemporary architecture is becoming more and more distinct and popular. Here are some examples which has utilised the color red in a creative and fascinating manner.
INES Innovation Center / Pezo von Ellrichshausen
The character and diversity of the space promotes the dynamics of a non-categorized work (or with ever-changing positions) between professors, students, researchers, entrepreneurs and the local communities.
Bristol Old Vic / Haworth Tompkins
The project aims to open up the front of house areas to a wider, more diverse audience and to place the theatre at the heart of Bristol’s public life and public space.
Higashi Sanchome Toilet / Nao Tamura
The design was inspired by Origata, a traditional Japanese method of decorative wrapping. A symbol of gift-giving, this motif embodies the spirit of hospitality towards Shibuya ward’s multinational visitors, and carries my vision to create a safe space that envelopes all users.
Installation Earth / SpY
An artistic project made up of a luminous red sphere caged inside a cubic structure, made with construction scaffolding commonly used in building construction. These 2 simple geometric elements (sphere and cube) make up this large-scale work of almost 25mt high. Added to this powerful visual approach is an intense red light emanating from the interior of the sphere from which you can almost feel the heat that the concept of the work transmits.
Nhaso 27 House / dmarchitects
The red color of the house developed from the red-terrazzo stairs (ground floor) is kept intact during the repair process, and at the same time, the reuse of the family's old furniture in the design will help recall the memories associated with the “home” in each person.
