Often, we get confused between these terms and we find ourselves in even more dilemma while selecting it for the furnishing in our own spaces. These are basically the surface finishes of the furniture like cabinets and drawers.

Laminates are made from compressing paper and plastic resin. Its basic raw material is also man-made. These are mass produced in different colors and patterns and finishes. 

Laminate gives desired appearance of the room. It is colder on touch. It is easy maintenance and waterproof. But it is not scratch resistant. Laminates are fire resistant and scratch proof; hence, it is a common choice for kitchen cabinets.

Laminates are more durable than veneer. As it is made up of plastic, it is not renewable.

Veneer is made up of fine wood compressed together over plywood. It is more expensive than the laminates, as it has actual wood. No two veneer can be exactly the same, because of the same reason. 

Veneer gives rich wooden finish, almost as the natural wood. It has a warm and luxurious appearance. It has a warm feel. It requires polishing after a few years. It also needs a melamine coating to be waterproof. Moreover, it is scratchproof but not fire resistant. 

Veneer is durable but not as much as the laminate. It has natural wood, so can be renewed. 

The foremost thing that you need to keep in mind while selecting one of these two surface finishes; laminate or veneer, is the theme of your space. Keep in mind the color and texture that you want. Laminates are suitable for kitchen cabinets and wardrobes, that are in everyday use. Veneer gives a rich and exquisite look to the furniture.
