Know The Difference Between Color Tints, Shades And Tones

Pure colors

It is important to understand what are pure colors to further understand the meanings of tint, shade and tone. The primary, secondary and tertiary colors in its true or saturated form are called pure colors. No other colors are added into it. These colors are mostly used as paint in spaces that engage children.

When white is added to the pure colors, the resultants are tints. Tints are also called pastels. These are lighter than the pure colors and less intense. Tints are soft and subtle. A common choice of designers to give a soothing effect. 

Shades

Shades

The colors obtained by the addition of black into the pure colors are called shades. These are darker than the pure colors. The black in pure color reduces the brightness and the shades obtained are dull. Black should be carefully added, as it can easily become overpowering.
