Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, master architect, first Indian to win Pritzker Prize, urban planner, educator and 2022 RIBA’s Gold Medalist has passed away at the age of 95, in Ahmedabad on 24th January, 2023, leaving the entire world in grief. One of the architects who shaped the architecture of India, BV Doshi, pioneered modernism with vernacular.
Born in 1927 in Pune, BV Doshi studied Architecture at the JJ School of architecture in Bombay. He worked with Le Corbusier for around 8 years as a senior designer and collaborated with Louis Kahn for about a decade. In 1956, he founded his practice, Vastu Shilpa with two more architects.
Inspired by the works of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, BV Doshi created his own design philosophy and expression which drew inferences from modern techniques and local traditions. His work is responsive to the climate, culture and craft and spans through a variety of scale and function. Some of his well-known works include Ahmedabad School of Architecture, Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, Aranya Low-Cost Housing, the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi, the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, the Tagore Memorial Hall, Institute of Indology and Premabhai Hall. He was recognized and appreciated for his work by the RIBA Honours Committee in 2022 and Pritzker Jury in 2018.
Undoubtedly, Balkrishna Doshi has designed some of the most iconic buildings of the country. He has not only inspired the younger generations through his work but also through his lectures and writings.
