An antique, yet ever evolving ceiling light fixture is a Chandelier. Merriam Webster defines a chandelier as “a branched often ornate lighting fixture suspended from a ceiling.” It is different from other hanging lights as it has more branching.
Chandeliers with candles came into design during medieval period and in 1800, it worked with gas lighting (homestratosphere.com). Now in the digital era, the chandeliers have evolved to change the light colors as well as intensity and also the height with just a touch on phone.
Lighting has an impact on the mood of a person. The brighter the light, more intense emotions are felt. For example, finding a person attractive or increase or decrease in the appetite. Light is an important aspect in creating a good ambience for any space.
The purpose of this article is to give information regarding the types of classic and elegant chandeliers and where to use which one, to enhance the appearance of the space.
1. Candle Chandelier
It gets the name from its candle type lights which was previously used with actual candles. It is the oldest kind of chandelier, and so it feels more authentic. It shows grandeur and is suitable for ballrooms or large living rooms.
2. Crystal Chandelier
This type of chandelier is named after the material that is used in it, the crystals. It portrays pure elegance. Raindrop and staircase chandeliers are also the subtypes of this kind of chandelier, which gets its name from the shape it is arranged in. It can be used in ballroom, living room and at the center of the spiral staircase. It is not apt for bedroom as it becomes too heavy for such a personal space.
3. Shaded Chandelier
The shades over the lights gives a warm and dim light instead of the bright one. The shades can be upward- or downward-facing, fluted or straight, and transparent or opaque. It has rustic elegance and crisp modernity. It fits over both the themes of a space. It can be installed in dining room and entry hallway.
4. Drum Chandelier
It is easy to recognize by its peculiar shape. It is a drum shaped shade over one or more lights. It gives a warm light because of the shape. Its simple design makes it easy for mass production and different sizes. Suitable for bedroom and living room.
5. Bowl Chandelier
It is simplistic and resembles to the shape of a bowl. It is obtained from turning a dome upside down. It can have one large bowl at the base or surrounding few smaller bowls. It has an understated look. Its soft diffused light makes everything pleasing. It can be installed over dining table or piano set.
5. Tiered Chandelier
It is an elegant ornate chandelier. As the name suggests, it is multi-layered. It is available in various material and sizes. But even its average size is bigger for some spaces. Ball rooms, dining halls and entrances are a few places where it is seen commonly.
7. Modern Chandelier
Simple yet futuristic, these modern chandeliers are a popular choice at this time. It is also because the available sizes are not huge and it doesn’t require much space. It leaves an impression on the viewer mind but is not overwhelming. It can be put in offices, entries, living rooms and bedrooms.
8. Sputnik Chandelier
Also known as starburst chandelier. It is usually a striking sculptural hybrid of globes and shooting spikes of varying sizes with the light source tucked into the center and distributed out and around the end points (bellacor.com). It is apt for offices, lounge spaces or entrances.
9. Caged Chandelier
There is a literal and abstract approach in the design of this type of chandeliers. There are many subtypes to it, depending upon the geometry of outer case. It includes lantern, globe and geometric. These are simple and attractive. It can be installed in smaller spaces too, because of its designs of smaller sizes. Though empty space around it is preferred, as it complements the design and attracts the attention of the guests.
